The most common way to get around the islands are either by boat or plane. Domestic flights can be as low as or lower than $100 USD however the plane carriers are known to have poor on-time records and frequent cancellations. Boats travel to every inhabited island in Indonesia with trips taking from a few hours to a few weeks. The costs to travel in boat can range from $40 USD/day for first class to $10 USD/day for economy class. There are poor safety regulations on ferries and they tend to be overcrowded
Typical transportation by bus, train, and car/taxi are also seen and offered in most cities. For short modes of transportation within cities, the becak or a tricycle is the preferred method of transportation; however, drivers tend to overcharge for trips.
